INTERNATIONAL FLAMENCO DAY – CELEBRATION OF COMMUNITY
Sunday, November 16 (Victoria)
The Flamenco de la Isla Society invites you to an evening of flamenco music, dance, fashion, and silent auction!
This evening is all about celebrating International Flamenco Day while we raise funds for local flamenco guitarist, Gareth Owen.
Gareth is the backbone of many of Flamenco de la Isla Society’s productions, and he is a popular guitarist for flamenco e vents in both Victoria and Vancouver. Gareth is a masterful guitarist who has dedicated his life to this dynamic and complex art form. He has proven his commitment to our flamenco communities, and now is our chance to support him!
Gareth has recently won a BC Arts Project Grant for phase 1 of his research, creation, and exploration of flamenco “toque” (guitar). Gareth plans to travel to Andalucia, Spain, where he will meet with other professional flamenco artists, gain connections to support his work, and develop even more creative energy that will surely benefit our whole community.
We invite you to come and support Gareth, along with many other local talented artists, as they showcase the passion of flamenco. Please come and enjoy live music, dance, and a colourful fashion show (with a sneak peek of costumes to be sold at an upcoming Flamenco Fashion Pop-up), and check out many other silent auction items including a locally made flamenco guitar ~ all in celebration of community.

Jhoely Triana Flamenco – Arboles (Trees)
How can we learn from the beautiful trees that surround us and the metaphorical trees that connect us? Featuring flamenco music and dance, “Arboles (Trees)” invites the audience into the universal language of emotion. Choreographed by Jhoely Triana, the 10-minute, solo dance performance connects with audiences to share themes of hardship, perseverance and determination. Dancing on and off a tree trunk shaped dance board, the dancer reaches, pushes, gathers, and channels the rootedness, strength and renewal of the trees through grounded flamenco footwork and elegant floral hand gestures. The work spreads the seeds of empathy and compassion.
Content Notes and/or Trigger Warnings: Stomping and loud noises.
